Toy Fox Terrier
All the terrier attitude in a package small enough to fit in a coat pocket — and they are fully aware of it. Toy Fox Terriers are lightning-quick, keenly observant, and surprisingly athletic for their size, with a working history that includes both farm ratting and actual circus performance. They're devoted to their people and suspicious of small strangers who underestimate them.

The Toy Fox Terrier is a tiny rocket ship of a dog with the heart of a much larger animal. Developed in the United States from small Smooth Fox Terriers crossed with toy breeds like Chihuahuas and Italian Greyhounds, they were originally bred to hunt rats and other vermin on farms, then later dazzled in circus acts thanks to their sharp minds and flashy athleticism. Don’t let the 8.5 to 11.5 inch frame fool you, this is not a lap ornament.
In real life, you’ll find a dog that’s always tuned in. They’re friendly and deeply affectionate with their people, scoring a perfect 5 out of 5 on trainability and affection, but they’re also wired with a 4 out of 5 energy level. You’ll need to commit to at least 30 minutes of active play or training daily.
Think fetch in the hallway, flirt pole sessions, or learning a new trick every week. Without mental stimulation, they’ll invent their own jobs, like chewing baseboards or barking at shadows. And yes, the barking is real.
They’re alert and vocal, which makes them excellent little alarm systems but less ideal for thin-walled apartments if you’re not diligent about training. Grooming is easy, short coat, minimal shedding, but don’t mistake low maintenance for zero maintenance. They’re sensitive to cold, so yes, you’ll probably be buying them sweaters.
Health-wise, watch for patellar luxation and Legg-Calvé-Perthes, both orthopedic issues common in small breeds. Reputable breeders will screen for Von Willebrand’s and hypothyroidism, so never skip vet checks or cut corners on price. These dogs aren’t cheap for a reason, quality breeding matters.
They’re great for first-time owners who want a trainable, loyal companion and fantastic for apartment living if you’re active. But keep them away from toddlers. Their 3 out of 5 kid-friendliness isn’t just a number, they’re fragile and can be snappy if startled.
Older, respectful children are fine. Here’s the real talk: most people get a Toy Fox Terrier for the size and end up surprised by the terrier intensity. If you want a couch potato in a tiny body, get a Cavalier.
But if you want a dog that learns faster than you can teach, bonds like Velcro, and keeps you on your toes, this is your breed.
