Smartest Dog Breeds
Let's get one thing straight. When we talk about the "smartest" dog breeds, we're not measuring IQ, creativity, or how well your dog figures out where you hid the treats. We're talking about working and obedience intelligence—specifically, how fast a dog learns a new command and how consistently they follow it the first time you ask. That's what Stanley Coren measured in his 1994 study, based on surveys from nearly 200 obedience trial judges across North America. And while it's not the whole picture of canine intelligence, it's a solid look at how certain breeds respond to training as we typically do it.
The top dogs here—Border Collies, Poodles, German Shepherds—are sponges. They pick up new commands in fewer than five tries and obey 95% of the time. That's Tier 1. But being on the lower end doesn't mean a dog is "dumb." An Afghan Hound might take 80 or more repetitions and only follow the first command about 25% of the time, but that's because it was bred to hunt independently, not look to a person for direction. Their brains work differently. Same with Basenjis or Shiba Inus—brilliant in their own right, just not eager to please in the way obedience trials reward.
This ranking only captures one slice of intelligence. It doesn't measure problem-solving, emotional awareness, or instinctive skills like scent tracking or herding. But if you're looking for a dog that learns fast and listens well, especially in structured training, these tiers are a real help. We ranked all 276 breeds by Coren's tiers, so you can see where your pup lands—and why that number might not tell the whole story.
